Our expanding digital collection of cultural objects pertinent to Black Iowan history includes a wide array of photographs from the 19th century to the present, letters, pre-emancipation newspapers with articles written by Frederick Douglass, contemporary newspapers on recent events such as Black Lives Matter in Iowa, household products and cosmetics, advertising trade cards, postcards, magazines, records and DVDs, among other items. The objects remain in the personal collections of the donor and, through their inclusion in this digital archive, they enter into cultural discussions. Make sure to also watch the Scholarly Videos by experts who bring these unique objects into larger national discussions!
