The back has a lengthy description: “H296-(V26144) An Arithmetic Class, Tuskegee. When the slaves were set free, they were entirely ignorant. In many of the slave states it had been a criminal act to teach any negro to read or write, yet all these ignorant men were made voters. Little by little schools were established but even yet a large proportion of the southern negroes are illiterate.
In the south, Booker T. Washington founded the Tuskegee Institute in order to educate negroes both industrially and mentally. He taught them to farm and work, and he taught them to be thrifty, to save, to become owners of their own homes. In such a school, the training of the mind received careful attention, too, and many of them prove very bright students. Their time was divided between reading, writing, arithmetic and such studies and the vocational work. This is a pleasant classroom; the pupils are interested; everyone is at work. It is the ordinary classroom spirit of Tuskegee. Very many of the pupils make great sacrifices; they work very hard to get to the school. The aim is to give them an all-round education so they will live better and happier lives and at the same time be more intelligent citizens.
Booker T. Washington realized very fully the value of the training which school gives. Habits of promptness, of precision, of regularity are cultivated. People learn to work together respecting each others rights. A well conducted school gives self respect. Schools like Tuskegee will do much to help in the solution of the race problem.”
