Jefferson Iowa Chautauqua Program with the Black troop “The Shaver Jubilee Singers”

A program for the week-long Chautauqua states “Official Program Jefferson Iowa Independent Chautauqua, twenty second assembly”
It features the Elwyn Dramatic Company “In Two Great Plays” and many other performances from operas to “table lifting” and “ghost walking” over the week.
On Saturday, August 21, from 7:45 pm on, they held a “full concert–The Shaver Jubliee Singers–Negro spirituals–Plantation melodies–Readings from negro writers–Comedy sketches”
The program has a photograph of the Shaver Jubliee Singers and a description:
“Old, plantation songs, negro spirituals, wonderful harmony in melodies of the southland will characterize the programs of the Shaver Jubilee Singers. This is one of the greatest of the modern, old-fashioned jubliee companies on the platform. And who does not enjoy the old song–songs dear to the hearts of the American people.”
