Debates over extending slave territory through war with Mexico / Britain gives equality to Jew

Title of article: Slavery safest under freedom’s cloak — describes resolutions offered in the House of Representatives by Ohio Congressman Perry and how they were delayed. One of the resolutions was “That the present War with Mexico was neither sought nor advised by the State of Ohio, and while its ends and results sare and have been, beyond her control and foresight, her citizens have been with the National flag, and have attested their devotion to it on many fields…. and that the State of Ohio must be heard, and will have a share in determining the character of the institutions by which each territory shall be governed.
Immediately beneath this article is a small article titled “Removal of Jewish Disabilities” describing that the British Parliament will remove all civil disabilities currently placed on Jewish citizens. The article quotes the Globe newspaper: “The Protestant, the Catholic and the Jew will bind themselves, by these respective declarations, to perform their duties to the country, and we trust that no religioius differences prevent their harmonious cooperation.”
A third article, immediately below this one, returns to the subject of the war with Mexico. It describes that the Philadelphia Ledger “has a peculiarly modest and impartial mode of arguing down those who oppose the subjugation and annexation of Mexico. It calls them ‘old grannies,’ ‘fools,’ and … ‘Sophomores.’ ” The article later states: “We snatched Texas on a pretence that Englad was about to induce her to abolish Slavery; now we are to sujugate Mexico for fear she should establish a Government which will “curb her plunderers, elevate her rabble,” &c. so as to make her a strong and happy instead of a weak and wretched nation.”
