Harper’s Weekly image of Emancipated Slaves, white and Black

The image names each of the enslaved people depicted. The caption states: “Emancipated slaves, white and colored— the children are from the schools established in New Orleans, by Order of Major-General Banks.”
An article follows on p. 71

The images shows that enslaved people were white, probably from light-skinned parents. If the mother was enslaved, then the children were also. Images like this were used for Abolitionist purposes.
