A postcard photograph of a group of young people, probably students posing with the women sitting in the front on the grass, the men standing behind. What is unusual is that, although the women are all dressed in attire traditional for the period–white flouncy dresses and wide neck scarfs or ties–the men are all dressed somewhere between Japanese attire and that of clowns. They all carry Asian parasols but they wear one-piece suits with great big polk dots and they have heavy make-up on their faces. It’s sort of yellow-face—but then, not exactly.
