In 1965 King was accused of allegedly attending a Communist workshop because of his association with Tennessee’s Highlander Folk School. The school had been maligned as a “Communist training school” on billboards put up throughout Alabama during the Selma to Montgomery March that depicted King at a Highlander workshop. This postcard shows that not only billboards were used to disseminate this misinformation.
The front of the postcard has an image of people seated in an auditorium. An arrow with the word “KING” points to one man. Above the image is the caption “Martin Luther King at Communist Training School”
The back of the postcard has printed on it: “Lower left, arms folded, is W. Abner Berry of the Central Committee of the Communist Party. To King’s right, Aubrey Williams, Pres. of the communist front SCEF, and Miles Horton, dir. Highlander Folk School for communist training at Mounteagle, Tenn. Picture taken by secret counteragent during Red Workshop in race agitation. (For additional copies, write Councilor, Oil & Gas Building, Shreveport, LA. $1.00 per 50.
