On a modest looking intersection an strange block stands out on the sidewalk. A caption on the right at the top of the image says “Old Slave Block, Fredericksburg, VA.” The backside of the postcard has the caption: “Old Slave Block. This old slave block was used in the days preceding the Civil War for the sale and hire of negro slaves.”
The left margin says: “Published by Louis Kaufmann and Sons, Baltimore, Maryland”
The slave block has been preserved in place for decades after slavery was abolished.
