Dwain Coleman received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Iowa and teaches history at the University of North Alabama. His research focuses on the ways in which Black Civil War soldiers used the political capital of their service to demand the recognition of their state and national citizenship rights and claim space in midwestern communities.
