John Warne Monroe teaches modern European history at Iowa State University. He is author of two books, Laboratories of Faith: Mesmerism, Spiritism, and Occultism in Modern France (Cornell University Press, 2008) and Metropolitan Fetish: African Sculpture and the Imperial French Invention of Primitive Art (Cornell University Press, 2019).
